Cash machines or cash guzzlers?

Best Bet, an Australian gambling counseling in a report claims the close proximity of automatic teller machines (ATM) or cash machines to casinos is fuelling problem gambling in the Riverina in the New South Wales.

“We are considering placing restrictions on the operation of ATMs in or near hotels. The changes would include ensuring patrons can only make one daily withdrawal from ATMs in gambling venues,’ says Cliff Banks, spokesman for the counseling body.

While the government is yet to respond on the proposal, banks in shopping malls place ATMs and leisure centers, so customers who do not want to use credit cards, can have easy access to cash, Best Bet’s plan could draw resistance from financial institutions.

‘I think we can go back to 1998 and 1999 when they were first introduced into the clubs and the restrictions were placed on them then I think the ATMs are too readily available to seek funds from for gambling,’ adds Banks.
