Buenos Aires Studying Online Gambling
In Argentina, the Mayor of Buenos Aires has announced that his office is studying the possibility of legalising online gambling in the city with Greek firm Intralot reportedly in the running to obtain a local licence.
According to newspaper La Nacion, online betting is banned in the national capital with the Contraventional Code punishing illegal gaming. But, Mayor Mauricio Macri would like to modify this law and call for tenders in order to operate such businesses.
In Argentina, regional laws dictate that individual provinces may issue gaming licenses while a Federal regulation dictates that all sportsbetting be handled by the National Lottery monopoly. Due to this legal uncertainty, several sites currently operate in the country such as Formoapuestas.com.ar, Vcapuestas.com.ar and ar.888.com. Formoapuestas.com.ar, which operates with a license from the Social Assistance Institute of Formosa with bets handled in Buenos Aires, reportedly handled $98,856 in bets last year and paid $3,295 in taxes.
