Europe's iTV Betting Future Looks Bright
Despite the sad demise of Attheraces, the relationship between betting and television is looking pretty healthy. A new report from market analysts Screen Digest forecasts that interactive television betting will turnover €4bn (US$4.87 billion) by 2007 with gross margins of €709m (US$864.7 million). The U.K, benefiting from regulatory reform, will account for 65 percent and the bulk of the revenue will be generated by iTV bingo and casino-style games.
The second largest single market is set to be France. “By 2007,” states the report, “we believe that the French iTV BG&L will have a turnover in excess of €500m. The bulk of revenues will come from sports betting, although lotteries will be catching up rapidly.”
Screen Digest predicts that by 2007 lotteries will provide over €1bn turnover. “Lotteries will play an important role, as Europe's national lottery operators seek to build on the development of online services by offering TV-based alternatives.”
