UK a Nation of Responsible Gamblers
A government report released today (Friday) reveals that, while sales of Lottery tickets are down, two in three Britons have gambled in the last year through bingo, bookmakers or Internet casinos and that the public have a generally favourable view of such pursuits.
The report is a result of the government seeking public response to its draft Gambling Bill, issued last year, and they should be reasonably pleased with the results. The proposed establishment of the Gambling Commission a powerful regulatory body which will police all businesses operating in the industry, was given a boost with 36 per cent of respondents were in favour of tighter controls on internet betting, with 35 per cent keen on a tougher regulatory regime for slot machine gambling.
Minister for gambling Lord McIntosh said the report showed that the vast majority of people enjoy gambling responsibly. “This survey is a valuable reflection of public opinion at a time when we are modernising our out of date gambling laws,' he said. 'I was particularly comforted to note that those surveyed saw gambling as an activity with some risks and were in favour of continuing with very careful regulation in the future.
This matches the approach taken in the draft Bill which, by establishing the Gambling Commission, will create as comprehensive a system of control and regulation as exists anywhere in the world.'
