Casino companies will have to build cultural attractions such as opera houses and theatres and if they want to open large resort casinos. The proposed UK Gambling bill is being examined by a government committee, which is expected to recommend early in May that the proposed mega-casinos must contribute to the local community by building leisure amenities.
The committee wants to ensure the resorts are not purely focused on gambling. The panel is also expected to note the lack of preparedness among local authorities for the social and economic problems anticipated with liberalized gambling laws. The findings could be incorporated into the Bill, which is almost complete.
The Bill could become law before next year, prompting a boom for the gambling industry in the UK. Betting exchanges will be legalized, but the government is likely to account for (and tax) professional bettors who use betting exchanges. The UK chancellor in his budget speech this month that he intended to investigate the matter.
