Anger and Jubilation: Reactions to the WTO Decision

Washington’s response in the wake of the World Trade Organisation’s historic ruling has been one of incredulity and indignation. The decision, which stated that the federal government’s restrictive policy toward Antigua’s online casino industry constituted a violation of international trade agreements, clearly came as a shock to a nation used to getting its own way in matters of trade and commerce.

'It's appalling,' fumed Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va. 'It cannot be allowed to stand that another nation can impose its values on the U.S. and make it a trade issue.'

Meanwhile, online casino operators are jubilant and filled with a kind of vidicated zeal. Dennis Rose, Senior Vice-President of Antigua based CasinoFortune.com, took the opportunity to publicly denounce U.S policy:

“As a licensed and experienced operator in the online casino business, CasinoFortune.com has been forced to constantly cope with the hypocrisy of American pressure imposed on the industry.”

He praised the new ruling as a victory for civil liberties stating: “CasinoFortune.com is disappointed that the American government…sought to tell its citizens what they could and could not do on their own home computers. For almost ten years, many online casinos have been forced offshore in order to operate. It's time to let these operations come home and let them be licensed, regulated and taxed by the United States Government…This ruling is a victory for all Americans who value their civil liberties and believe that they are free to do whatever they choose, so long as it does not hurt others.”
