Cyber Extortionists target online betting site
The Liverpool-based bookie and Internet casino operator, Stanley Racing disclosed today that its online betting site has been a victim of cyber extortionists trying to blackmail the operator into handing over money o shut down its online operations.
The website reportedly went down or offline for two hours. Stanley Racing believes the attacks originated from Eastern Europe. The management disclosed this after it was revealed several UK gaming companies had been attacked or threatened by online gangs earlier this week at a cyber-crime conference in London. “In spite of these extortions or attacks we are not giving in to threats of this kind,” said a spokesperson for the bookie.
Most online operators are expecting similar attacks to coincide with the Grand National in April -- the biggest betting event of the year. Detectives from the UK's National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) are investigating the case.
