Just a day after the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) announced its plans to open an online version of its casino, the move is already under criticism by some influential anti-gambling advocates.

ALC’s defense is that millions of betting dollars are leaving the region via the Internet and online gambling is only for leisure and not for money. The online casino operator estimates that Atlantic Canadians spend up to $20 million a year on Internet gambling, with most of that money going offshore.

Father Brady Smith, who condemns such Internet lotteries said, ‘I've never heard the word entertainment. But I certainly heard, 'For a big payoff'. And that's why they go in there. They don't need anything new coming out. We have enough problems right now.’ He adds that if ALC opens up in cyberspace the gambling addict problem will only grow worse.

‘We plan to introduce Internet gaming to Maritime gamblers. Games such as Lotto 6/49, Super 7, and sports games could be offered online. Strict controls will be in place so minors couldn't play,’ said President Michelle Carinci.

She adds that the company has no intentions to recreate a casino or video lottery terminals at home, unlike other online casino operators.
