Ancient Gambling Law Scrapped

A new clause to the draft UK gambling Bill, published on Thursday, proposes to repeal a law, dating back to 1710, which prevents gambling debts from being enforced. The antiquated law, which dates back to rather more puritanical times, was passed to deny legality to a transaction that was essentially seen as a vice.

Under the new law a gambling transaction would become like any other commercial contract, giving companies the right to recover debts but also giving more power to the punter, allowing them to take legal action against casinos or bookies should they feel themselves wronged.

Another additional clause seeks to stamp out cheating, by allowing the Gambling Commission to freeze suspicious bets pending investigation.

Gambling Minister Andrew McIntosh said: 'This is another step forward in the journey toward the much needed modernisation of gambling laws in the UK. We have made it clear from the start that we won't put the integrity of gambling at stake. The draft Bill shows that the only dead cert for people looking to cheat is that the Gambling Commission are ready, and will be on their case.”
