Website gambling ads targeted



Pop-up ads, banner-ads, jazzy flash ads on gambling websites could be a thing of the past if the Department of Justice (DOJ) has its way. The DOJ has issued a subpoena to the San Antonio-based media giant Clear Channel Communications and other media companies about online advertising by illegal Internet gambling sites.

The assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri subpoenaed on Sept. 9

to the channel about commercial advertising by offshore Internet gambling businesses. While no indictment has been issued for Clear Channel, the move by DOJ targets sports bookies and any kind of online betting or wagering websites located outside the U.S.

This move could affect more than 1,800 offshore based online casinos, which gets part of their revenues from advertising besides revenues from players. The subpoenas state that all records pertaining to advertisements by Internet gaming establishments dating back to 1997 would be under scrutiny. For now, scores of subpoens have been sent out the department, but now restrictive action has been taken.

Despite U.S legal restrictions, credit card wrangles and now the subpeonas the online gambling juggernaut moves on each year from strength to strength since 1996 with revenues pegged at $6.3 billion for 2003 and expected to touch $7.6 billion in 2004, according to Christiansen Capital Advisors LLC.
