Missouri Radio Stations Settle With US Attorney’s Office

Three sports radio stations based in St Louis, MO, have handed over $158,000 after being accused by the US Government of advertising online gambling. The District Court in St. Louis decided that KFNS-AM, KFNS-FM and KFRT-AM had ‘knowingly received thousands of dollars from illegally promoting offshore and online gambling activities from mid-2000 to September 2003’. They did not contest the allegations.

U.S. Attorney James Martin said in a statement that not only did the radio stations agree to forfeit the money; they also agreed to provide evidence in ongoing related investigations.

Arthur Margulis, who represented the radio stations, agreed. 'There is a nationwide investigation into media companies that have been deriving revenue by advertising offshore betting,' Margulis said. 'We elected to forfeit the amount of $158,000 and resolve the matter in that way.'

Margulis said the three companies are one entity incorporated under three separate names. Their assets were sold in the last two weeks, Margulis he added.

The State of Missouri is particularly restless in its crusade against online gambling, having in the past threatened the likes of PayPal and Clear Channel Communications; more recently, it closed down pimpmyride.com, deeming it an illegal online lottery.
