Irish racing a substantial boost yesterday, as the Irish Minister for Arts Sports and Tourism, John O’Donoghue, announced a new 550 million Euro fund to invigorate the horse and greyhound racing industry and keep it financially secure for another four years. This extends the current three-year grant of €254 million spanning 2001 to 2004.
O’Donoghue said: “I am pleased to say that the government has agreed to increase the aggregate limit on the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund from €254m to €550m to allow for the continuation of the fund for a further four-year period to 2008, and has commenced the process to put this in place.”
The minister added: “Major projects at Leopardstown and The Curragh will obviously benefit from the new fund and this income will also be used to fund administration and integrity costs alongside a programme of capital investment.”
