Betting Exchanges Welcome Irish Investigation
Betfair and Betdaq, the world’s biggest two betting exchanges, have said they welcome a planned investigation by Irish racing body, The Turf Club, into betting exchange activity within the Irish racing world. Rob Harnett Managing Director of Betdaq, told the to The Racing Post said he will have a meeting with Turf Club officials within the next two weeks.
“I would wholeheartedly agree with any measures which the racing authorities would wish to implement in order to insure the integrity of the sport. We have been working closely with the Jockey Club in Britain over a period of some time and, while that cooperation may lead to some short term pain in terms of information coming out about potential wrongdoing, I think overall it is for the good of the sport in the longer term.”
“There is a belief out there that backing a horse to lose is in someway damaging to the sport, he added. ”But, anybody who takes the time to look or think about it would realise that horses lose races for any one of a million of reasons – and only one of those is because the race has been fixed. If there is any skulduggery we can now in reality see if this is the case and if so it can be stamped out.'
Betfair has echoed Harnett’s transparancery and willingness to co-operate for the good of Irish racing.
