HRTV joins with DISH

Magna Entertainment Corp (MEC) announced yesterday that it has started a new relationship with EchoStar Communications Corporation. This new alliance will result in MEC’s Horseracing TV branch (HRTV) significantly increase its distribution in the US. The new arrangement starts taking effect from this Thursday, 15 July.

From this date HRTV will now be available on EchoStar’s network- DISH-which effectively broadens the potential viewing figures by 10 million. This is the number of subscribers to DISH who will now be able to access the HRTV coverage within their existing subscription deal. The agreement between the two companies also encompasses viewers via DISH Latino DOS and DISH Latino MAX. The total distribution now for HRTV will be in excess of 11 million cable and satellite subscribers.

The HRTV programme covers action from the 13 racetracks which are either managed, owned or operated by MEC, as well as over 60 other North American tracks they are not involved in. Betting on the action is conducted through XpressBet, MEC’s national account wagering arm, either via phone or internet.

Spokespeople from both companies issued statements regarding the new agreement. President and CEO of MEC, Jim McAlpine said, 'HorseRacing TV(TM) was created to ensure the widespread television exposure that is critical to the rebirth of horse racing as a major sports and entertainment activity…We are absolutely thrilled to have achieved this distribution milestone, and we look forward to developing a successful relationship with DISH Network and our affiliated racetracks.'

Representing DISH’s viewpoint, vice-president Eric Sahl stated 'We look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship with DISH Network that builds national brand recognition for HRTV and the racing industry while providing DISH Network and its subscribers with valuable, daily, live, sports programming from many of America's premier racetracks…HRTV complements DISH Network's powerful line up of sports programming.'
