Forget baseball and bowling, InterPoker.com is launching an audacious attempt to have poker named as a new Olympic sport at the 2012 London Games. InterPoker.com is convinced that the massive interest Poker has received in recent years could give it a real chance of succeeding.

According to spokesperson Peter Marcus, “There has been a massive surge in the popularity of Poker as it is one of the most highly skilled sports around. Also ESPN & Fox, as well as Sky Sports in Britain, have been showing Poker during their prime time sports shows for over two years with very high ratings. Given the very strong support for Poker and the UK Gaming Act coming into force by 2007, we believe that London would be the perfect venue for Poker to make its début as an Olympic Sport in 2012. For a sport to qualify as an Olympic event, it must be played in 75 countries across 4 continents. Poker goes well beyond that.”

The decision to include new sports ultimately lies with the International Olympic Committee and there has been much speculation that there will be a major shake-up of the current structure.

InterPoker, a leading Internet Poker Network, would like to see two Poker formats included, Texas Hold ‘Em and online “6 pack” games.
