Retailers hoping to cash in on poker craze

The next sector lining itself up as a beneficiary of the global poker craze currently taking place is the retail industry. In the US retailers are stocking up on poker paraphernalia- cards, gaming tables and chips- anticipating that they will be a popular purchase in the months leading up to Christmas. Shops are already showcasing their poker related wares for keen shoppers to purchase, and are expecting a boom in the sales of such items.

While online and casino based poker playing has been growing at an impressive rate, and TV shows focusing on poker have proven very successful ventures for the networks that carry them, poker playing at home has also risen sharply. Retailers are seeing this as a sign that consumers’ demands for poker playing kit at home has also risen, and are producing lines of merchandise designed to resemble the quality and style that you would see at a casino but that can be taken home or bought as gifts for the growing number of followers of the game.

It is likely to be a safe bet for retailers. PokerStars.com has done some research on the matter, and has made and estimate that 50-60 million people play poker at least once a month. This figure includes those who play online, at casinos and in professional tournaments, but also includes those who also play at home or groups who organise their own local tournaments. As people’s enthusiasm for the game increases so too does the market for the necessary tools, and the opening for line of products bearing a strong resemblance to those used for professional tournaments and in big casinos.
