Number Of British Casinos To Soar
The steadily rising number of casinos in Britain could leap by more than 50% to 211 sites.
The new Gambling Act is yet to be in full force but thirty-nine applications for new casino licences have been still been filed so far this financial year under the old regulatory regime.
Stanley Leisure, which is Britain's largest casino group with 41 sites, is hoping to open eight new sites this year.
Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, expressed her concern at the spate of applications and imposed a cut-off date of April 2006 for submissions under the old legislation.
The new Gambling Act will provide for a new wave of larger casinos, which initially will be limited to 17 sites, including one Las Vegas resort-style establishment.
