The ill-effects of a life in video poker have been on show in a Pennsylvania court room. John “Duffy” Conley, 42, has been sent back to prison after violating his probation and making nearly $4 million in bets at the back end of 2005 through a number of offshore casinos and local bookies. Conley was originally in prison for a nine year stint, having run an illegal video poker ring in western Pennsylvania. Despite limits preventing payouts, Conley is said to have pocketed $15 million a year from the 4,000 machines. He was convicted in 1995. This latest episode, which took place over four weeks in November and December last year, has been seen by prosecutors as a gross violation of his probation. His attorney argued that Conley had a gambling problem that needed to be dealt with. If ever legislators need an example of a man brought to his knees by video poker, it seems that Conley is it.
