Alderney, Channel Islands – 19 April 2006:

The Channel Islands are renowned for the stability of government and for the highest standards of regulation accompanied by a sound judicial system. To facilitate establishing a global e-gambling presence the States of Alderney has passed legislation that supports the development of e-gambling in accordance with international standards. Shortly after introducing its own legislation to allow electronic betting in 1998, the States of Alderney appointed the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, an independent and non-political body whose members are internationally recognised experts in gambling regulation and licensing.

Gambling via the internet has quickly become a multi-billion pound industry and is forecast to grow even faster. The island of Alderney ( population 2500) may be a rather unlikely participant in this most dynamic and competitive sector, but the fact is that Alderney is quickly establishing itself as a ‘’jurisdiction of choice’’ for an ever-growing number of international gambling companies. Apart from the dozen or more licenses which have already been issued, the Alderney Gambling Control Commission has reported in its latest Annual Report that it has issued licences to the following operators:

o Tombola Limited

o Harrah’s Online Poker

o WagerWorks

o Spin Leisure

o Probability Games

o SportsWinBet (CI)

The Commission also considered the suitability of the following two companies to be associated with licensees:

o World Poker Tour (WPT) and

o International Game Technologies (IGT)

Certificates of Prior Approval were issued to the following software providers:

o Chartwell Technology Ltd

o Orbis Technology Ltd and

o Playtech (Cyprus) Ltd

The total number of licensees in Alderney now stands at 18 with more in the pipeline. What is the attraction of this small island located just 8 miles off the coast of France.

Put simply, the answer is world-class regulation and world-class telecommunications.

Alderney’s Gambling Control Commission is widely regarded as a model of international best-practice in the area of on-line gambling regulation. Through its neighbour Guernsey, Alderney is also offering the sort of telecommunications infrastructure which you would expect to find in London or New York.

It just goes to show that you do not need to be big to compete in today’s world but you do need to be world-class
