Another Strange Piece of History Purchased by Online Casino

The bathtub that James Earl Ray stood in when he shot Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has been sold to online casino, Golden Palace for $7,600.

“The 10-day ebay auction ended on Thursday afternoon with Golden Palace Casino placing the winning bid,” said D'Army Bailey, the Memphis judge who owns the tub.

Bailey said that Golden Palace have assured him that they will treat the tub, 'with sensitivity for its historical significance ... and not use the tub in any way that degrades its historical importance.'

The opening bid for the tub was $7,500 and a percentage of the proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Memphis.

The tub first went on sale in July 2004 and drew a bid of $152,000, but eBay removed it because of worries the item might be considered offensive, particularly to King's family. However, the Web site's operators later decided the historic value of the item met its guidelines.
