Orbis Partners with The Tote on Totesport Website
London, UK – April 3, 2006 – Orbis, an NDS company and the world's leading provider of interactive gambling software, announces that it will provide the totesport, Britain’s most established and respected bookmaker, with its OpenBet™ interactive gambling platform for the re-launch of its totesport.com web portal. Under the agreement, Orbis will deploy a new sports betting site, call centre application and fixed odds games, using its single account back-office solution. The tote is one of the largest bookmakers in the UK, operating over 540 shops, and has a major presence on each of the 59 racecourses in Britain. The tote offers multi-channel betting services, including Internet and telephone betting for global sports events and is the only pool betting operation on horse racing in Britain.
Orbis’s pioneering OpenBet™ software platform, deployed by the world's leading bookmakers, is a complete gambling solution that enables customers to bet on all channels and all products from a single account, all controlled through a single back-office. With OpenBet™, customers can place bets on a variety of products – a sportsbook, on-demand, scheduled and virtual games, P2P exchanges, lotteries or pari-mutuel pools – over almost any channel, including the web, mobile devices, retail outlets, call centres and interactive digital television, all from a single log-in. With the recent launch of the OpenBet Casino™ and OpenBet Games™ products, Orbis now offers front-end games content and concepts, thus providing a complete end-to-end service.
David Loveday, Managing Director, Orbis said: “We are very pleased to be working with such an established name as the tote, which, like Orbis, stands for security, safety and integrity in the gambling world. As one of the leading bookmakers in the UK, we look forward to building a long-term relationship with such an important industry institution. We are confident we can provide a smooth and successful integration from their existing systems, providing the tote with even further business opportunities moving forward.”
Keith Oliver, Managing Director of E-Gaming at the tote, said: “We are confident that the combination of our heritage and experience with the Orbis OpenBet™ platform will enable us to effectively grow our offering to a wider and more diverse customer base.”

Notes to editors:
• The tote, was established by Act of Parliament in 1928. Its original purpose was to offer on-course pool betting on horseracing as an alternative to starting price betting with bookmakers and to distribute its profits for “purposes conducive to the improvement of breeds of horses or the sport of horseracing”. The first major race meetings with tote betting were the flat race meetings at Newmarket (July Course) and Carlisle on 2nd July 1929.
• Tote Direct was set up in 1992 to channel tote bets from high street betting shops into tote pools. Now tote betting terminals are in more than 4,500 shops across the UK, including all totesport, Ladbrokes and Coral shops. The tote internet betting operation was launched in 2002.
• In 2001 responsibility for appointments to the tote Board moved from the Home Secretary to the Department of Culture Media and Sport. The Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, now has responsibility for the appointment of the Chairman and appointments to the Board of the tote.
