Internet gaming group PartyGaming is making its first push into online sports betting, with the acquisition of Gamebookers.

PartyGaming has paid Trident Gaming €102m (£70m) for Gamebookers, which currently provides online sports betting in 12 languages and has more than 50,000 active customers. The move is aimed at diversifying PartyGaming's products and extending their geographical reach.

PartyGaming chief executive, Mitch Garber, said, 'We believe that sports betting will be a valuable addition to our integrated gaming platform, which we expect to provide excellent cross-selling opportunities for our expanding base of customers outside the US.'

PartyGaming operates poker and casino websites and generates 76% of its revenues from the US.

Gamebookers, which is licensed in Antigua and operated from Bulgaria, has customers in 140 countries. The group does not accept bets from customers based in the United States, where the authorities have begun clamping down on online gaming with the arrest last month of BetonSports chief executive David Carruthers.
