In response to the recently scheduled 'field hearing' on the issue of internet gambling in the US, Michael Bolcerek, president of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has released a statement.

Bolcerek begins by saying that he welcomes the chance to discuss the matter, but that the time could be better spent discussing more important issues. “Field hearings focusing on high gas prices, quality education and healthcare, or the escalating war on terror would be a much more appropriate and productive use of taxpayer dollars,” he suggested.

Describing the proposed prohibition bill as “shortsighted,” Bolcerek said that making exemptions for internet wagers on horse races, lotteries and fantasy games is inconsistent with the desire to ban online gambling. “Moreover, Americans learned long ago that prohibitions don't work,” he said. “In fact, prohibiting online poker will only drive the industry underground, essentially creating unregulated online 'speakeasys' for people to play this game of skill.”

Bolcerek closed the statement by suggesting that a more sensible approach would be to licence, regulate and tax as is the case with “brick and mortar” casinos and card rooms.
