French authorities have followed their American counterparts in waging a war on poker and online gambling.

PokerStars.com has been hit by news that French club, Le Salon des Ambassadeurs, has banned all images of the online poker room’s advertising and that of its top name, 2003 WSOP winner Chris Moneymaker.

The move appears to be the latest in a series of crackdowns. In September of 2006 executives from online gaming operator BWIN, were arrested in the South of France in scenes reminiscent of those preceding the introduction of America’s Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which saw the arrests of David Carruthers (BetOnSports), and Peter Dicks (Sportingbet).

Recently, The European Poker Tour announced that the Deauville leg of the tour was to be scrapped. The tournament was shelved at short notice despite hugely successful events at Deauville in 2005 and 2006.

Whilst the UK and Italy continue to relax laws on gambling, and the European Poker Tour announces new legs in Poland and Germany, it seems the French are moving in the opposite direction.
