New legislation in Victoria, Australia, dictates that venues known affectionately as “pokie parlours”, will have to limit the number of signs advertising their sites. The draft law, which has yet to come into effect, would set an edict that each venue would only be allowed one billboard for advertising purposes. If the law is enforced it will come into effect from July 2005, and cover the state’s 534 gaming pubs and clubs.

The news has not been greeted warmly by proprietors of these kinds of venues, especially in light of the fact that a Victorian casino- Crown Casino-is being made exempt from the ruling, due to the belief that any of their advertising announces a whole complex, rather than just the section which hosts poker or slot machines.

Chief exec of the association Clubs Victoria commented; “There will be no decrease in gambling- it will simply shift business into the hands of the casino and hotels with main street frontage. It’s the non-profit sporting and community clubs that will be the big losers out of this.”

Any feedback from organisations concerned by the new ruling can be received by the ministry responsible for the decision, the Commission for Gambling Regulation, with a spokesperson assuring, 'All comments must be taken into consideration before the final regulations come into effect.'
