UK to end gambling ad ban
Britain is planning to lift tight restrictions placed on advertising for casinos, betting shops and online gambling websites.
The government is planning to lift a ban on broadcast advertising on television and radio for gambling that has previously only exempted the National Lottery. Gambling adverts are currently limited to billboards, sponsorship and online advertising.
Strict rules will be put in place to protect children and "vulnerable members of society" as part of the Gambling Act, which is due to come into force this September, and adverts will be monitored by the Advertising Standards Authority.
Under the new regulations, adverts for casinos, betting shops and gaming websites will be permitted as long as they do not encourage irresponsible gambling or target children and young people.
Roger Wisby, secretary of the Committee of Advertising Practice and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice, said: "These changes to gambling regulation mark a significant milestone in the way betting and gaming can be advertised in the UK."
People appearing in broadcast gambling adverts must not be, or appear to be, under the age of 25 and ads must not suggest that gambling can provide an answer to financial or personal problems.
