Iconic casino comes to an end
One of the most iconic casinos in the world has been reduced to rubble as the ever-changing landscape of Las Vegas holds no sentiment for history.
The Stardust casino, which was the first mass-market casino hotel on Las Vegas' famous Strip, was imploded as part of a redevelopment initiative. The famous hotel will be replaced by Boyd Gaming Corp's $4.4 billion mega resort, to be known as Echelon.
Many gamers will be sorry to see the Stardust go. Renowned the world over for its cheap rooms as well as plentiful food and drinks, the casino held a special place in the history of gaming.
Launched on the Strip in 1958, the Stardust's history intertwined with that of gambling itself. The legend of Las Vegas grew up around the casino and it wasn't long before many others began to grow up around it.
The Stardust was given a typically Las Vegas send-off, with a vast array of fireworks helping to blow up the building in front of many amazed - and sad - onlookers.
