The management consultants at MECN, Media & Entertainment Consulting Network, have published the results of a new study looking at trends in the German betting and lottery market following the Federal Constitutional Court’s decision on the state treaty on gambling.

The survey’s key finding, the result of detailed market analysis, is that the future of the industry is dependent on an opening of the market and revision of the state treaty on gambling.

Germany has been in the spotlight in terms of EU gambling law after EU Industry Commissioner Günter Verheugen wrote to German regional state governments on March 23 giving them a month to amend a draft agreement on a ban on online gambling.

Martin Oelbermann, partner at MECN, said: “The current developments make a detailed analysis of the future of the German betting and lottery market imperative.”

The study’s findings included speculation that the current state treaty, which ends in 2012, may pave the way for the liberalisation of the gambling industry. It also found that the German online poker market is set to see a boom in the coming years.
