ThwartPoker.com raises poker stakes

After two years of development, Thwart Poker, a relatively new player in the online poker space, claims to have unveiled a first-of-its-kind online card game that boasts patented technology to redefine poker -- by replacing chance with skill.

The Palo Alto, California headquartered company is touting its licensing deal with Atlas Mobile, Inc. that provides distribution on Verizon Wireless for a monthly subscription of $2.99. Thwart is now positioning its poker offering as the next evolution of traditional poker. Relying on artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Thwart enables virtual opponents to judiciously select cards and bet and bluff with human-like subtlety.

The 3-year old company’s two initial Thwart Poker website games include Hold'em Blitz and 6 Card Battle. Selected website play is free; multi-player online tournaments for prizes are coming later this month.

‘Our secret is to tap into human nature. People love to outwit others, to anticipate what they'll do and then one-up them, block or thwart them, beat them. Our patented technology dynamically adds this element to regular poker thereby making it something completely new, and at the same time, something completely familiar,’ says Daniel Pfeiffer, co-founder and CTO, Thwart Poker.

Since games such as Thwart Poker are skill-based, they do not face the legal constraints encountered by traditional online casino games, which are classified as gambling under US laws and therefore do not violate U.S. federal gambling laws.
