More UK Poker Clubs Targeted

The owner of the Belfast poker club raided by police a year ago has been convicted of breaking the law.

Sean Murphy, who runs the Cavendish Club, was fined £3,000, whilst slot machines seized in the police raid were destroyed and another £2,000 in cash seized given to charity.

A Crown lawyer hinted that this would be the first of many similar prosecutions.

Club owner Sean Murphy opened the Cavendish Club a number of years ago in Belfast, and things had been running smoothly ever since. When he opened the club he spoke with a senior police officer to make sure there were no problems, due to the grey area of the law on poker clubs. The officer assured Murphy that, were there any problems, he would be in touch.

The police got in touch in January of 2006 when some thirty police officers in riot gear stormed the club and seized more than £20,000 in prize money.
