Missouri moat claims Kansas fugitive

A man drowned in a casino moat in Missouri on Saturday after becoming more than cagey when his ID was questioned by authorities.

Anthony D Swopes attempted to enter the Isle of Capri casino, but was rattled when bouncers wanted to check his card.

He fled, hurdling security railing and leapt into the casino's moat, after it was revealed that he had an outstanding warrant for arrest.

Firefighters arrived to recover the 21-year old just after 1am, but he was pronounced dead at hospital.

Jill Haynes, spokeswoman for Isle of Capri Casinos, said the Missouri Gaming Commission was investigating.

It was the second fatality caused by the moat in recent years, according to police, who said that a woman had died after jumping into the moat in July 2005.

Security moats are not uncommon at Missouri casinos since an amendment to the state's constitution allowed riverboat casinos to float within artificial moats.
