And the survey says…yes to US gambling
It seems that the sourpusses in the States who want to outlaw a bit of fun may have to think again about their restrictive laws, as 82 per cent of people in the US approve of gambling.
According to a survey by the American Gaming Association (AGA), last year saw record-breaking spending in casinos last year, with poker more than playing its part.
Casinos in the gaming states saw punters spending an all-time high of $32.42 billion last year, up 6.8 per cent on 2005.
Poker revenues were up 15 per cent on the previous year, with over $238 million created for the economy by poker in Nevada and New Jersey casinos alone.
In fact, 14 per cent of Americans indulged in a little poker action last year at least in the home, with the majority saying it gave them quality time with friends and family.
The majority of people questioned knew that online gambling now had restrictions but the larger portion of people also protested that poker was a game of skill, which is where the great debate lies.
If the authorities accepted that poker was a game of skill, it would not fall prey to the online gambling legislation.
Frank Fahrenkopf, AGA president concluded: "This year's State of the States report highlights the two-fold success of the casino gaming industry - strong economic growth combines with widespread public approval - that makes casino gaming a mainstay in the American entertainment industry."
