$3.3 million blackjack cheats nabbed
Twenty-four people, alleged to have used technology and bribery to cheat casinos out of $3.3 million over five years, have finally been arrested by Canadian police.
Members of the Tran Organisation gang robbed casinos across the US and Canada and were indicted for rigging black jack and baccarat games since March 2002.
One of the methods the racketeers used was to secretly signal dealers to fake a shuffle and then place bets on the order of the cards, the indictments state.
Another allegation is that the gang used concealed transmitters and special software to predict the order of the pack.
The racket is believed to have been based in San Diego and Seattle, with Jacob Dyson Nickels, son of Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, among those charged.
One of the biggest suspected hauls was in October 2005, when the gang netted $868,000 in just 90 minutes at the Resorts East Chicago hotel and casino. "We are not aware of any other cases of this magnitude," said Kathy Leodler, acting head of the San Diego FBI field office.
