WSOP Numbers Unaffected By UIGEA
The sponsors of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament, Harrah’s Entertainment, has announced that player numbers have not been affected by the passage of America’s Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
Following the passage of UIGEA in October, Harrah's announced that it would not be accepting players to the WSOP who were sponsored by online poker, casino or other gambling websites. Many felt that this announcement would mean a lower turnout than last year’s record-breaking event but, in fact, this year’s event has already seen 7,000 more players sit down to play.
Through the first 44 WSOP 2007 events, more than 38,000 players have tried their luck. This number is much higher than the 31,000 players that played through the first 44 events of last year's tournaments.
Harrah's said that it has seen an increase in players registering for the tournaments for many reasons. Although the WSOP no longer accepts online satellite tournament winners, Harrah's has changed the payouts in tournaments to spread more evenly so that more players can win more money. It also said that it has made it easier for players to register and pay tournament fees.
