Betfair.com and Harrah’s have made a provisional agreement that the online poker and gambling site will be ‘Presenting Sponsor’ of the World Series of Poker Europe through to 2011. Whatever the complaints about the all-new Milwaukee’s Best Light World Series of Poker branded courtesy of Harrah’s entertainment (ching ching!); they are at least liberating the WSOP from the confines of Vegas and bringing the poker tournament series to Europe. Hurrah for Harrah’s! It will even be possible to win a WSOP bracelet at the European series.
The opening event of the first ever WSOP to leave Nevada will take place in London. Casinos Fifty (St James) The Casino at the Empire (Leicester Square) and The Sportsman (Marble Arch) are all run by London Clubs International, and will host tournaments from the 6th – 16th of September.
“This is an historic deal for us,” said David Yu, chief executive officer of Betfair. “To present the WSOP, with its 38-year tradition, on its first venture into Europe is a great honour.”
The first WSOP Europe will consist of three events, the largest of which will be the £10,000 buy-in Main Event, which will be limited to 750 runners playing for a £7.5m prize pool over six days.
