Super-casino Bill Under Threat
Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, is facing mounting pressure to allow further scrutiny of the proposal for a Super-casino in Manchester.
Labour rebels, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats are reported to be highly likely to reject the measure in the Lords as well as the Commons. A defeat of the Super-casino plans would also block development of the other 16 planned casinos. Cities most affected will include Great Yarmouth, Kingston upon Hill, Leeds, Newham, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Solihull and Southampton.
But the culture secretary has so far refused to split the order, to allow further scrutiny of the regional casino.
Despite having supported the new casinos and the liberalisation of the online gambling industry, the Conservative party have explained their u-turn by saying that they are “being consistent with our priority of reducing the problem of harmful gambling.'
Expected to open by spring 2010, the Middlesbrough casino, with restaurants, bars and a hotel, would bring at least £10m of investment and 300 jobs to the town.
In an attempt to mollify those planning to oppose the bill the Culture Secretary promised that the resort would receive extra money for regeneration.
