Taiwan to Introduce Sportsbetting
In an effort to stimulate economic growth in the poorer central and southern areas of Taiwan, the island nation could launch sports gambling as early as next year.
The Director of the Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Yang Chung-ho, said that, barring mishaps, Taiwan would open sportsbetting in April of next year.
Sports officials stated earlier that Taiwan intended to introduce three kinds of sports gambling in these areas, including car and horse racing. Car racing could be the first to be introduced as Taiwan would not need to change the law for it as, under Taiwan's Animal Production Law, animals cannot be used for gambling purposes either directly or indirectly.
The Council is due to decide which institution should be in charge of issuing sports lottery tickets in September.
