Girl Power hits Online Casinos
A recent article in the Telegraph newspaper suggests that women are becoming more of a stable fixture in the world of online gambling thanks to the accessibility of low-risk high-reward opportunities.
Mark Griffiths, professor of gambling studies at Nottingham Trent University, said that “Very few women gambled before the National Lottery was introduced in 1994, but right from the start they accounted for 50 per cent of ticket purchases.”
“Research shows that women generally prefer to play with small stakes to win a life-changing amount of money, rather than playing high-risk games that require a lot of time and strategy,” he added.
The rapid growth of the online casino industry has afforded women with exactly this kind of opportunity, with some statistics showing that women account for up to 70 per cent of users at a number of online casinos.
Simon Burridge, chief executive of Virgin Games explained, “We don't specifically try to attract women to our site, but we do find that they often prefer the faster games, such as the Wheel of Fortune or Monopoly, where they can bet £1 and have the chance of winning £50,000,” he said.
“As a result we have included more of these games and we make sure that our site is easy and inviting to use.”
