Ritz-Carlton Miami’s Appetite for Poker

They really are serving poker for dinner at the Bizcaya restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Coconut Grove, Miami. Promoting their “Wine is Fun. Period!” dinner series, they are adding a game of poker to the more traditional benefits of fine dining, such as a chat with the chef (chef de cuisine, please) and sommelier.

The relaxed and informal five course dinners, which are limited to 14 guests, will see a card being dealt with each course. At the very end of the meal, the person holding the best five card hand will win a prize.

It’s a tribute to the psychological realism of poker that its analogies are used all the time in business and political journalism, as well as sprinkled in the conversation of devoted fans. Even sports events, like baseball are often described in terms of poker, but what I’d really like to see is a poker menu.

An pair of smooth avocado’s bluffing against a sharp seafood sauce, raised with pepper, and hitting a full house with tropical prawns.
