Norbert Teufelberger, the chief executive of Austrian online betting company bwin has voiced his concern that his company’s business model would become obsolete should the European Court of Justice rule in favour of member states.
The European Court of Justice is due in the next months to rule whether EU member states can outlaw betting agencies licensed in another member state. Some reassurance arrived in May of this year when the Court’s Advocate General recommended that member states should be prevented from doing this.
In an interview with Austrian newspaper Der Standard, Teufelberger stated, 'In principle, the Advocate General's recommendation reassures us,” he said.
“If the European Court of Justice didn't follow suit, the effect would be that national lawmakers can do as they want, and then you've got to say that a business model such as bwin's wouldn't make sense anymore.'
Bwin along with rivals including PartyGaming, 888 Plc and Sportingbet, was embroiled in this summer’s global clampdown on commercial betting operators by governments worldwide.
Teufelberger was jailed for several days in France, while several of his peers in the industry were arrested in the United States. A host of gaming companies have had to abandon their US business after the UIGEA was introduced to effectively outlaw Internet gambling.
