PM sinks supercasino hopes
Gordon Brown has thrown cold water onto Manchester's plans for a casino after he announced that the government would review its policy following his inauguration into power. At prime minister's question time, the new premier said: "In September we will have a report that will look at gambling in our country - the incidence and prevalence of it and the social effects of it." Manchester MP Graham Stringer claimed the government would make a "weak and bad decision" if it were to u-turn on the supercasino plans, as it is well-known that Manchester had hoped that the new development would regenerate the city and provide employment. Yet Mr Brown said he hoped the government could discuss over the summer whether there was better way of meeting economic and social needs than through creating supercasinos. He added that other solutions could be to invest in local infrastructure. "This is an issue on which there is no consensus found in the two Houses of Parliament and it is an issue now subject to reflection over the next few months," Mr Brown concluded. It is still unclear how the decision will affect the 16 smaller casinos that were planned, although sources believe it is only the supercasino that the prime minister objects to.
