WSOP top prize named

Organisers have revealed that the prize for a first place finish at this year's Main Event in the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) will be approximately $8.23 million.

This number was calculated after 6,358 players have been confirmed to participate in the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Texas Hold'em World Championship competition over four starting days. Some 621 players will take a share of the rest of the $59,784,954 total Main Event prize pool.

Last year, a record-breaking 8,773 poker fans entered the Main Event, bringing the champion, Jamie Gold, $12 million in winnings. However, nine months after US legislation was put in place to quash online gambling, fewer poker fans were able to qualify through web-based satellite games, which may be why numbers are down.

However, the entries this year do constitute the second largest number ever in the history of the WSOP. Furthermore, since more events were played this year - a total of 55 - 54,288 poker players have ended up participating, which does create a new tournament record.

Other records for sheer number of entrants were broken in the Ladies Championship, the Seniors and the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event this year.

Meanwhile only nine poker aces will face each other at the final table on July 17th.
