Casino schools teach the tricks of the trade

Chris Moneymaker, an Internet poker player who won US$2.5 million in last year’s World Series of Poker is helping lead the way for new casino and poker schools cropping up in America. Davidson and Dutsch have launched the Mighty River Poker School (www.mightyriverpoker.com) to teach the tricks and the trade.

To tap into the growing base of online casino and poker enthusiasts, entrepreneurs like Beth Deighan started Casinocareers.com, an online job-placement agency, which specifically targets the casino job market.

With scores of new offline casinos popping up on floating riverboats and land across the US not to mention more than 1,800 online casinos, Deighan says ‘casino trained employees’ can earn up to US$8 an hour plus tips that can range between $10 and $30 an hour. Some average more than $50 an hour in tips, she says.

‘The opportunity is exceptional. Because the gaming industry is growing tremendously, expansions are not just across the country but worldwide,’ adds Deighan.

According to the American Gaming Association, more than 1 million people are employed by the casino industry. Between 1990 and 2000, the casino work force increased 79 percent, according to employment statistics collected by the association.

Several American Universities are currently offering online and classroom courses in gambling and casino management to tap into a growing market. Davidson and Dutsch the founders of Mightyriverpoker.com are confident of success, claiming to have more than 1,200 hits to their web site without signing up for search engine placement.
