Online Casinos Take Third Spot in Internet Survey

A study of America’s top web activities conducted by Internet information provider and marketer comScore Inc has discovered that online casino activities rose by 13 percent last month.

Conducted using comScore’s Media Metrix search facility, the results showed 12.4 million unique US visitors took advantage of some form of online gambling activity, which placed it in third spot overall behind Internet music and radio providers and gay/lesbian sites.

The rise in online gambling activities was attributed to interest in Las Vegas’ World Series Of Poker (WSOP) tournament with PokerStars.com seeing the highest growth during the month in the category.

With school holidays in America, younger-skewing gaming information and online gaming categories rose nine and eight per cent respectively to 42.8 and 64 million unique hits each.

IGN Entertainment was up 17 percent to 10.4 million visitors and led the gaming information growth subcategory with Disney Games, up 38 per cent to 6.3 million hits, grabbing the honours for game-playing sites.

The rise in gay/lesbian activity was attributed to June's Pride Month with PlanetOut leading the category growth while Internet music provider Yahoo! led the growth in this category with more than 25 million visitors. AOL Radio rose eleven per cent to 3.2 million visitors alongside Disney Music, which rose 16 percent to 1.1 million visitors.
