Gambling set to face gogglebox watershed

Bookmakers and betting and gaming firms have lashed out after secret government discussions have been revealed that might restrict their TV advertising efforts.

It has been disclosed that parliament may introduce new legislation which bans gambling companies from advertising before the watershed.

After culture secretary James Purnell told the Sunday Times that the government would be reviewing the gambling act, the proposal came up at a secret meeting at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The act had originally legalised TV advertising for casinos and bookmakers for the first time.

Yet bookies claim the new plans are too restrictive, as their advertising would suffer due to not being allowed to broadcast during some major sports events.

The industry had previously approved a code of conduct confirming that betting firms would not depict people aged less than 25 in its adverts.

The DCMS reassured the Times that "discussions are ongoing and nothing has been finalised".

Meanwhile, gambling bosses remain angry that previous plans to relax legislation on the industry have been watered down, due to political wrangling.
