Pirates and Steelers v casino planners

In Pittsburgh, a battle has commenced between two sports teams and a new casino that is planned for the city.

Upset that Pittsburgh Planning Commission approved the Majestic Star Casino after not having the chance to take into account the amount of traffic that the casino might drive past the teams' stadiums, the Pirates and the Steelers have now called upon the state Supreme Court to intervene.

Following the teams' complaints that football fans and baseball fans heading to Heinz Field and PNC Park could be disrupted the Court has now ordered an expedited review.

Both teams must submit legal briefs by August 17th and the Majestic Star casino developer Don Barden and the planning commission would have until September 6th to reply.

If the casino gets the go-ahead after all, it will cost $400 million to build and the owner has already paid its $50 million licensing fee.

Meanwhile Mr Barden has already won a major victory after state Supreme Court dismissed legal challenges filed by competitors for the slots licence awarded to Mr. Barden earlier this month for a another new casino west from the Carnegie Science Centre, which should now open in 2008.
