Online Casino Keen to ‘Spel’ the End of EU Probe

Sweden’s largest gaming company, Svenska Spel, a company offering a sportsbook, lottery site, poker room, gaming site and bingo room, may find itself heading for court after it failed to accept the European Commission's (EC) findings that it has contravened EU law on the freedom of movement for goods and services by blocking gambling firms from neighbouring EU countries.

Sweden’s government justified the gambling monopoly by arguing that laws are fair and aid the prevention of crime as well as providing social protection to Swedish gamblers.

If the EC fails to accept the Swedish government’s arguments the case may be moved to the European Court of Justice which may prolong the outcome of the case by a number of years.

Petter Nylander, Chief Executive of online gambling group Unibet, expressed his dismay at the move, saying: ‘It looks like the market will be opened up by the European Commission rather than the government and it doesn’t make any political logic.’
