Around 32 million adults in the UK have had a flutter during the past year, with 68 per cent of the population having participated in some form of gambling in the last 12 months, a new report from the Gambling Commission has shown.

Although the National Lottery and scratchcards were the most popular ways of chancing your hand, betting on horse racing was the third most popular form of gambling, with as many as 17 per cent of Brits admitting to having a punt on the gee gees.

Actually, while the popularity of the National Lottery Draw has dropped from 65 per cent to 57 per cent and playing scratchcards has also declined from 22 per cent to 20 per cent, horse racing is gaining ground.

Online gambling, such as playing poker, is more popular these days than visiting a live casino, though only by three per cent.

Men remain higher rollers than women, with 71 per cent of men placing a bet compared to 65 per cent of women.

Somewhat contrary to popular belief, it is not always the poorer people who are hoping to get lucky, as the report revealed that people in higher income households were more likely to gamble than those with lower incomes. While 61 per cent of people in low income families chanced their luck, 72 per cent of the people making the most money enjoyed playing for high stakes.

In addition it seems the educated may be mathematically advantaged, with 73 per cent of gamblers having obtained GCSE equivalents, while 61 per cent of gamblers held a degree.
