Slezak Bluffs for Title

In America, an amateur poker player went home Sunday night more than $50,000 richer after beating some of the best poker players in the Midwest at the inaugural Horseshoe Poker Classic.

Sponsored by Red Stripe and held at the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the tournament saw Bob Slezak from nearby Omaha, Nebraska, outlast 60 of the area's best poker players to capture the title of Horseshoe Poker Classic Champion. In addition to the cash prize, Slezak also walked away with a championship bracelet and trophy.

A 50-year-old investor, Slezak already boasts a World Series Of Poker (WSOP) bracelet and career earnings approaching one million dollars. In addition, he finished in 15th spot at the recent at the WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas but said that playing close to home was ideal.

'It feels great to win,' said Slezak. 'It's a real treat to play in a major tournament and be able to sleep in my own bed.'

Slezak said that he plans to return to the Horseshoe Casino to participate in the 2008 WSOP Circuit Event in February after spending some time with his family.

'The price for the time I spend playing poker is that my wife and kids come across with the winnings when I do well,' said Slezak. 'I'm sure my wife already has plans for this money.'
