Star City casino donated to Labour
In a similar situation to the cash for favours allegations being made back in Britain, it has been revealed that a New South Wales casino made a massive donation to the Labour party in the run-up to the 2007 election.
The Daily Telegraph revealed that Star City Casino made a one-off $100,000 donation to the Labour party just months before it was due to enter into negotiations with the government over its monopoly casino licence.
The payment was revealed to have been made in the 2007 election funding declarations and was one of the largest single donations given to the party.
Star City Casino made the payment by cheque on November 3rd last year, four months before the New South Wales election and six months before the firm started its fight to retain its monopoly in the state.
Although Star City has been a Labour donor since it first began business in 1995, this latest payment is the largest single donation the casino has made.
Less than a year later on October 30th, the government announced that Star City would be granted a further 12-year licence to operate the only casino in New South Wales.
A Star City spokesman told the Daily Telegraph that the size of the donation was due to the consolidation of a number of smaller donations and pointed out that it paid $100 million to retain its monopoly.
